This year is a year for hope and solidness. It is true that we do not have control over much. But what we do have control over is our thoughts, our feelings and our perspectives. Grounding and solidness need to be the coping tools of this year. Because amidst the craziness you can find your solid ground and your calm perspective.

To me, 2009 is the Year of the Ox, and the year of hope! It’s a solid year. Even though there is so much going on around us that is scary and shaky, there’s a very important spiritual concept that you need to take with you: the knowledge that you have no real control over the outcomes of what goes on in the news, and what goes on in the world. But you do have control over your thoughts, your feelings and your attitudes. People say, “Isn’t that a just a small amount to have control over? There’s so much we don’t have control over!” Indeed, we don’t have control over a lot, it’s true! I want to acknowledge that. But we do have control over what we think, and how we perceive things. So you need to get busy understanding that you need to breathe, firstly. You need to calm yourself and to realize that even though there are scary things going on, when bad crap comes into your life, the truth is that there are still good lessons that come from those bad events. The bad events are not here just to annoy us and piss us off. They’re here to teach us something. You cannot learn patience unless you really have something you need to wait for. You cannot learn to treasure the important things and people in your life unless you’ve lost them. There are many people who ask, “Why did I lose this? Why am I getting sick? Why did I lose my job?” Get busy understanding the larger meanings of things! Get busy transcending—I love that word—getting through that thing. Get through to the other side, and start to see that there is a bigger meaning. When bad stuff goes down, good things come from that bad stuff. That, to me, is a universal principle. You don’t have control over a lot, but you have control over your thoughts, your feelings and your perspectives. When bad stuff is happening, good things are coming from that bad stuff.
(2:20) Spiritual notions are not so much about gaining things. They’re really about learning how to let go, and learning to be OK with non-attachment. We’re so busy in this world gathering and hoarding and holding on—me included! I’m a human being, and even though I teach this stuff, I have to work on this day in and day out. I know it’s a problem if I say to you, “Oh, I know how to do this stuff.” If I get arrogant, I promise you, I am slammed with lessons about non-arrogance. Don’t get arrogant and say, “Ah, I understand that stuff.” Just be humble and really understand that you have to constantly work at the notion of letting go, and being comfortable with letting go. I’m telling you, letting go causes so much anxiety for so many people. Letting go of jobs, letting go of people, letting go of secure homes and secure situations. But from the insecurity comes a deep learning and a deep lesson about how to deal with that insecure state. And I want you to learn to be solid in the insecurity, strong amidst the earthquakes, and solid amidst the shaky ground. Make 2009 the year where you are the ox! It is the year of the ox, and just think of that animal, how can work through very difficult earth. I want you to be that animal, the ox of your life, so you are confronting life in a very solid, empowered and strong way. And I want to give you a few affirmations to help you get through that. Number one, I encourage you to breathe and meditate, to get more calm and more balanced. Number two, do this affirmation: “Everything is working out better than I expect.” (That takes care of your negative expectations.) “All is well. I am safe. I trust in the process of life.”
(4:38) I know that people are in a really tough place, and the news is just feeding people a ton of fear. But you can stay solid among all of the lack of control. You really don’t have a lot of control. But what you do have control over is keeping your brain, your mind, your thoughts and your perspective positive, grateful and solid. I wish you a wonderful 2009! Use these videos to keep your life balanced.
